For Discos Only
La Craft Recordings, etichetta statunitense divisione di Concord Music Group, ha da poco pubblicato la compilation “For Discos Only – indie dance music 1976-1981” in cui sono raccolti 30 brani del repertorio disco delle prestigiose etichette Fantasy di San Francisco e Vanguard Records di New York.
Nella compilation, prodotta da Fred Jasper e Mason Williams, sono raccolti tanti rari singoli “12 inch” realizzati durante i giorni gloriosi nella scena musicale dei club americani.
La maggior parte dei singoli è realizzata nella speciale versione “For Discos Only”, marchio che contraddistingueva le produzioni esclusive per i DJ e le discoteche.
Le produzioni disco di Fantasy e Vanguard Records realizzate nel periodo metà ’70 primi ‘80 sono tutte di alto livello anche perché entrambe le etichette hanno un importante background nella musica jazz e funk (anche con il repertorio delle alter etichette di famiglia come Milestone, Prestige, Concord, Vee-Jay e Sugar Hill) .
Le note di copertina, racchiuse in un libretto illustrato di 16 pagine, sono curate dal DJ britannico Bill Brewster, esperto di storia della disco e coautore insieme a Frank Broughton del libro Last night a DJ saved my life, che ripercorre le tappe più importanti della club culture, descrivendo l’attività delle etichette discografiche Fantasy e Vanguard
e degli artisti rappresentati come The Players Association, Sylvester, The Blackbyrds, Side Effect, Two Tons O’ Fun, Fat Larry’s Band, Idris Muhammad, Damon Harris, Carol Williams e tanti altri.
For Discos Only è una preziosa collezione per i disco-lovers, soprattutto per gli appassionati di quel movimento pionieristico da cui è emersa la nascita del remix, l’innovativa pratica musicale ereditata dalla musica house, techno ed hip-hop.
