The Delegates of disco-soul

La linea di confine tra soul e disco è molto sottile per i Delegation.

L’esordio nel 1977 è quello di una tipica soul band inglese, tanto che dopo due anni (tanto c’è voluto per farsi conoscere essendo una band britannica) riusciranno a raggiungere su Billboard la posizione numero 8 della classifica Soul LPs con il loro primo album The promise of love e la posizione numero 6 della classifica Hot Soul Singles con il brano Oh Honey. Ma il pezzo contenuto nell’album d’esordio che più di ogni altro rappresenta questa felice commistione tra soul e disco è Soul trippin’, apprezzatissima nei club più di tendenza degli anni ’70. 

La svolta decisiva avviene nel 1979 quando i Delegation pubblicano l’album Eau De Vie (negli Stati Uniti intitolato semplicemente Delegation) che contiene tre singoli di grande successo, assolutamente distintivi per la band: Heartache No.9, You And I e Put A Little Love On Me.

Siamo negli anni ’80 e questo è il decennio dei Delegation, soprattutto per il loro caratteristico sound, elegante, sofisticato, ritmato e dolce, proprio come ci piaceva nel decennio dell’edonismo Reaganiano. I Delegation iniziano gli ’80, decade in cui la disco si trasformava in dance, con un album intitolato Delegation II, che contiene un altro grande successo, In the Night. Sia questo album che il singolo In Love’s Time, riescono ad entrare nelle rispettive classifiche americane. Nel 1982 la band, da trio diventata un duo, pubblica Deuces High.

The line between soul and disco is very thin for Delegation. Their debut in 1977 is that of a typical British soul band, so much so that after two years (so long it took them to become known being a British band) they manage to reach on Billboard the number 8 on the Soul LPs chart with their first album The Promise of Love and the number 6 on the Hot Soul Singles chart with the track Oh Honey. But the song on the debut album that most represents this happy blend of soul and disco is Soul trippin’, which was popular in the trendiest clubs of the 1970s. The decisive breakthrough came in 1979 when Delegation released the album Eau De Vie (in the United States simply titled Delegation), which contained three highly successful singles that were absolutely distinctive for the band: Heartache No.9, You And I, and Put A Little Love On Me. This is the 1980s and this is Delegation’s decade, especially for their distinctive sound, elegant, sophisticated, rhythmic and sweet, just as we liked it in the decade of Reagan hedonism. Delegation began the 1980s, a decade in which disco turned to dance, with an album entitled Delegation II, which contained another big hit, In the Night. Both this album and the single In Love’s Time, manage to enter their respective American charts. In 1982 the band, went from a trio to a duo, released Deuces High.
